Headteacher’s Blog – Friday 2nd October 2026

Making the most of rich curriculum experiences, on Wednesday our GCSE Geographers were out on coastal fieldwork. Mrs. Gomersal reports,

‘Geography Comes to Life at Hornsea! Our GCSE Geography students recently headed to Hornsea to investigate the hypothesis:

“Hard Engineering is effective at Hornsea.”

With mild weather on our side, students got stuck straight into their fieldwork, producing field sketches and collecting evidence to assess the effectiveness of the coastline’s sea defences.

It was a fantastic opportunity to see coastal processes in action. Students witnessed first-hand how groynes interrupt longshore drift and evidenced the impacts of terminal groyne syndrome further along the coast. Seeing these processes for themselves really brought their classroom learning to life.

A sudden lunchtime downpour didn’t dampen spirits, with students enjoying some well-earned chips from the local chip shop and plenty of time to catch up with friends outside the classroom.

Fieldwork is what makes Geography real — and Hornsea certainly delivered!

Well done to all our students for their excellent work ethic, enthusiasm and commitment throughout the day.’

We’ve had sporting success this week when our Year 10 footballers took on Bootham School in York and came away with a 3-0 win. We’ll have a match report for you next week.

Mr. Grierson has talked with Years 9, 10 and 11 in assemblies this week about the importance of attendance before, on Thursday, all of Key Stage 3 heard from Madame Cave and Madame Reed about the importance of learning a language. They started by celebrating, through the introduction of national flags, the large range of first languages (14) that we have in our school community before looking at how foreign languages influence our every day activities including our supermarket purchases and music.

Our great Ofsted report was published on the Ofsted website this week reports.ofsted.gov.uk/provider/23/121699 so that all can see that ‘Pupils thrive in an inclusive ethos at Boroughbridge High School.’ It’s been lovely to continue to receive positive feedback from parents, carers and people in our wider community along with gaining recognition in the local press. Click here

We’re looking forward to welcoming Year 5 and 6 students and their families to Open Evening on Wednesday 7th October. School will close at 2p.m. on that day so we can complete our final preparations. We’re delighted, as usual, that so many of our students are returning to proudly take part in many activities across the school to give prospective students and their parents and carers a real insight into life at Boroughbridge High School.

Have a lovely weekend!

Headteacher’s Blog – 25th September 2026

It’s been another busy and rewarding week at Boroughbridge High School.  Year 11 started their week with a Careers assembly, led by Mrs. Mannion, our Careers Adviser, reminding students of their possible post-16 options and highlighting the forthcoming Open Events in our local area. Year 11 can also look forward to an individual careers interview where they can discuss their possible futures.

In Forest School, Mr. Woodward reports, ‘With autumn in full swing we explored the idea of foraging. Students gathered apples and silver birch bark from trees on the school site (birch bark is rich in betulin which is an excellent tinder for fire lighting), whilst learning about the importance of only taking what we need to ensure minimal damage to the ecosystems we were taking from. Students were then taught about different fire lays, safe sighting, lighting and extinguishing of campfires as well as the fire triangle to ensure success. Each team excelled at this task and successfully created toffee apples flavoured with cinnamon and ginger over the coals and flames.’

Our students are always keen to take on leadership opportunities and this week, in assemblies, they heard how they can get involved in School Council and have a wider impact on what’s happening in Boroughbridge High School.

We have been supporting others today with our KS4 Health and Social Care group organising a brilliant bake sale to raise money for Macmillan Cancer, a charity that has and is providing superb support to some of our families. Thank you for your generous contributions which helped us to raise the impressive sum of £183.

We’re also now on the countdown to our Open Evening on Wednesday 7th October. School will close at 2p.m. on that day so we can complete our final preparations. We’re delighted, as usual, that so many of our students are returning to proudly take part in many activities across the school to give prospective students and their parents and carers a real insight into Boroughbridge High School. Exciting times!

Have a lovely weekend!

Headteacher’s Blog – 18th September 2026

We’re very proud of the number of Boroughbridge High School students who have completed their Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award over the last few years. This week, in assembly, students in Years 9, 10 and 11 heard from Mrs. Murphy about how they can get involved and take on the challenge. You’ll have received a letter with further information and, if you’d like to find out more, there’s a Parent/Carer Information Evening on Monday (21st) at 5.30p.m.

Attendance has been the focus of Mr. Grierson’s assemblies, showing students the positive impact that high attendance has, not only on progress made and outcomes but, in the longer term, pay and job prospects. Year 7 also had an assembly led by PCSO Martin Powell, our Police Liaison Officer, around knife crime and staying safe. Other year groups have heard this during our last academic year.

Not only are our values lived by our students, but they’re also demonstrated by our staff team. You may remember that Mr. Field, along with a friend, secured a place to compete in the ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Championship in Sweden which involved a 70km race of which 9km were open-water swimming and 61km trail running and considered to be a demanding course with 46 transitions. To finish the course before dusk, the competitors must be very fit and fast at getting in and out of the water. Their absolute resilience was shown as they completed the course (20% of those who started, didn’t) with a final position of 80th in the male team category……in the WORLD with a time of 13 hours and 15 minutes! An amazing achievement.

Meanwhile, last weekend Mr. Sands showed his own ambition and resilience, taking on the Great North Run. He completed the half marathon in 2 hours and 6 minutes.  What an achievement. He said, ’ ‘To participate in an event with 63,000 runners was incredible and the atmosphere from the runners and spectators, throughout, made it all worthwhile, although I had some very sore heels from 5 miles onwards. Next year’s ballot is open now!’

Whilst both of these sporting feats were impressive, what was equally impressive was their fundraising for the charities Cancer Research and the Alzheimer’s Society.

Thank you to the Parents and Carers who have attended the Expectations Evenings. Along with sharing our values, expectations and routines to ensure student success, it was also great to answer questions and to get feedback. If you weren’t able to make it to the sessions, then we’ll send out a summary for your information at the beginning of next week.

We welcomed some interesting additions to the school this week. Mrs. Turnbull says, ‘We are very excited to share that our new arrivals are now settling into their vivarium in S6. We have Shelley and Sheldon, our two giant African land snails and Digger, Millie, Bill and River, our 4 olive millipedes and Bumble, our tiny little bumblebee millipede. Our students will be getting involved in the care and management of these animals and we will keep you updated on their progress.’

Students have the opportunity to enter an exciting poster competition organised by Boroughbridge Social Club for their 100 years celebration. Mrs. Leeming will be telling students more at the end of assemblies next week.

Coming up next Friday we have school photos for all year groups and our Macmillan cake sale fundraiser. The fundraiser will take place at lunchtime organised by our Health and Social Care group. They would appreciate your help with cake donations or your child bringing in 50p so they can enjoy a piece of cake. In line with Benedict’s Law please can we request that all cake donations are nut and seed free – and if you could kindly write the ingredients or include any shop bought cakes in their boxes that would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance for your support. We’ll let you know how we get on.

Have a lovely weekend!

Headteacher’s Blog – 11th September 2026

We’ve had a fantastic first week of the Autumn term. It was great to welcome students back into school on Tuesday and lovely to hear staff and students share stories of their Summer break and adventures. As usual, uniform standards were high with everyone quickly getting back into routine. I enjoyed meeting each of our students in Expectations Assemblies which also became an opportunity for us to celebrate our successful Summer GCSE and BTEC results and reflect on our successful 2025-2026 academic year at Boroughbridge High School. We’ve also welcomed our new Year 7 cohort who are already settling in well and making a positive contribution to our school community. Thank you for your support in helping us to have this positive start.

Over the Summer, Jake in Year 10 showed remarkable commitment by taking part in the Backyard Ultra Marathon. This involved him running 4.16 miles on the hour, every hour, for as many miles as possible. His brother and sister ran some of the legs with him to support and encourage him with Mr. Field joining him for one leg too. Jake managed to complete an amazing 50 miles in 12 hours and in the process raised £1600 for Dementia UK. A very proud moment indeed and a great demonstration of ambition and resilience. Well done, Jake.

In assemblies this week, Mrs. Godsell-Wright has been getting the year off to a good start with a focus on our values; that we are ambitious, respectful and resilient, asking students to really think about what they mean and the difference that they make to us in being the best version of ourselves.

We’re coming towards our Year 5 and 6 Open Evening on Wednesday 7th October and yesterday we had great fun being filmed for a video to capture everyday life at Boroughbridge High School.

You’ll have seen that we’re looking for new Governors to join our Governing Board. Please check ParentMail for further information.

Next week, it’s our Expectations Evenings from 6-7p.m. During these sessions you will hear key information about our values, expectations, curriculum, phases of learning, behaviour for learning system, attendance and using My Child at School. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions about any aspect of school life. This part of the session has been really helpful in the past as we’ve been able to use your feedback to inform our decisions. They will be held at 6p.m. on Monday 14th September for Years 8 and 9, Tuesday 15th for Years 10 and 11 and Wednesday 16th for Year 7. If you have children in more than one year group, then please choose the time which is most convenient for you. Please e-mail schooladmin@boroughbridgehigh.com if you wish to attend.

Have a lovely weekend!

Headteacher’s Blog – 17th July 2026

And so as we’ve hurtled towards the Summer break, we’ve been making the most of every opportunity. As you’re aware, last Friday a group of our Year 11s went across to King James’s School for a post-16 taster day. Mrs. Mannion reports, ‘What a welcome we received there and it was a brilliant day. Over 50 students took part and attended a range of taster lessons which included a variety of subjects such as Digital Photography, Economics, Further Maths, Media Studies, Product Design, Sociology and Textiles. Students were able to have their break and lunch in the new sixth form centre. Students also tried the food in the sixth form cafe, paninis were very popular! There was also a tour of the school after lunch. Students gave lots of feedback including,

“The teachers introduced the subjects very well.”

“The Year 12 students who were helping were kind and made us feel welcome.”

“The cafe was awesome, with a lot of options.”

“There is a study room in the sixth form centre which looks good.”

“The sixth form centre was really well set up and we talked to a lot of students who we did not know.”

We would like to thank King James’s School for making us feel so welcome and especially thank Mr Churchill and Ms Sewell for all their hard work in making the event possible.’

This visit links in with our CEIAG (Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance) strategy and as part of this we have displayed, around the school, information about past students and where they are now. So, this week we were delighted to hear of the success of Harvey who left Boroughbridge High School five years ago with the dream of becoming a doctor. On completing his A levels Harvey went on to study Medicine at The University of Manchester and this week he graduated. He’s starting his first Doctor position in Harrogate next month. What an amazing achievement and our congratulations go to him.

We’d love to hear from you if you attended Boroughbridge High School and have your next steps story to share.

With the Summer holidays mind, Mr. Grierson has kept safety at the heart of his assemblies this week. He’s talked through possible dangers, giving students advice on how they can keep safe. The Local Authority have also published guidance for parents and carers which can be found here

Sports Day on Wednesday was an absolute triumph. It is such a heart-warming whole school community event which, quite honestly, seems to get better and better every year. Along with excellence, students are rewarded for participation and it was lovely to see so many students involved in events whilst the rest of their form class cheered them on. Field events took place in the morning under a slightly cloudy sky and then the sun shone through for the afternoon track events and I’m delighted to report that 17 school records were broken across the year groups. Winning form classes were 8SW, 9SCA, 10AB and 11DG. Well done to all!

So, it was a return to the Great Yorkshire Show on Thursday, an important event for our local community and an excellent venue for our Rewards Trip. As hundreds of students gathered in the Sports Hall before getting on the coaches, there was a definite air of excitement. Students were superb throughout the day, thoroughly enjoying the experience. They returned, getting off the coaches, all with large smiles and some with large furry toys which had been won!

And so to today. Before the day began, some of our students were showing their care for nature when they found a young hedgehog in distress. They alerted Mr. Hepburn who helped them to rescue the hedgehog which is now on the road to recovery.

During Lesson 3 we had our whole school assembly where we were able to celebrate our successes through photos, music and awards. It’s great to reflect on the past year and see the wide range of opportunities that our young people have access to and maximise. It is clear how incredibly proud we are of our school community and that our values, that we are ambitious, respectful and resilient are lived values at the heart of everything that we do.

Thank you for your ongoing support. We wish our students and families a happy and safe Summer break and we look forward to welcoming students back into school on Tuesday 8th September.

The Children’s Commissioner, Dame Rachel de Souza is currently carrying out a survey with young people across the country called ‘The Big Future’. The purpose is to find out how to make their lives better in the future, the big challenges of growing up and how prepared they feel to vote and be adults. She intends to take their thoughts, opinions and ideas to decision makers and politicians to ensure the government hear their voices. Students at BHS are currently completing the survey in their PSHCE lessons and you can find out more at https://www.childrenscommissioner.gov.uk/the-big-future/

In assemblies this week, Mrs. Godsell-Wright has been raising awareness of exploitation with our young people. They explored forms of exploitation, what it might look like and how they can look after themselves and each other. Mrs. Godsell-Wright will be sharing the slides for your information.

This week, Mrs. Turnbull reports, ‘We’ve heard that we’ve had two more entries into another recent Young Writers competition. Fabian (Year 10) and Tyler (Year 9) both entered the 100 words writing competition based on the theme ‘Wanted’. Both wrote imaginative stories and were thrilled to receive confirmation that their entries will be published. We are so proud of them both.’

Our congratulations also go to Ruby in Year 8 who has received some exciting news.  Ruby had to send in self tapes for an audition for ‘Front & Centre’ and has been selected to attend the Northern School of Contemporary Dance one Sunday a month over the coming year, for a four hour training session with West End/Broadway pros. She also auditioned with two self tape dances for YDC (York Dance Company) Associates programme which runs sessions on Sundays monthly too. Unfortunately too many clash so she has had to turn this down – hopefully she can re- audition next year! What an impressive achievement.

Today, 51 of our Year 11 students have travelled across to King James’s School for the Sixth Form taster day. We’ll look forward to hearing about their post-16 experience when they return.

As we’ve moved into our second heatwave in school, we’ve been impressed with students’ efforts to focus, and our continued high uniform standards with students wearing either their PE kit or usual uniform without their blazer. We’ll continue with this until the end of term with the exception of the Rewards Trip on Thursday to the Great Yorkshire Show when students can wear clothes of their choice.

Thinking ahead to the Summer break, we have a message from FEAST who provide fully-funded summer holiday activities.

‘We have issued FEAST vouchers to all families whose children/young people receive benefits-related free school meals. These vouchers entitle your child to fully-funded places on FEAST activities this summer holiday, where they’ll also receive a free heathy meal. You should have received this voucher via email or text, from a platform called HolidayActivities. Follow the link to redeem your voucher and book your child’s place on some of the fantastic activities on offer in our area.

If you believe your child is eligible and you have not yet received your voucher, or you have lost it, please contact the school office before the end of term at schooladmin@boroughbridgehigh.com To learn more about FEAST, and for information on activities, eligibility and how to manage your bookings, visit the website.’

So, along with the excitement of the Rewards Trip next Thursday, we’ve also got Sports Day on Wednesday. Then on Friday, we’ll all be getting together for our whole school assembly to celebrate our successful year at Boroughbridge High School.

A reminder that school will close at 1.30p.m. on Friday 17th July for the Summer break.

Have a lovely weekend!

Headteacher’s Blog – 3rd July 2026

Well, what a week!

It’s been our transition week for Year 6 and we were delighted to welcome parents, carers and students into school on Monday evening to hear about the next part of the process; attending BHS on Wednesday to Friday for the transition days. Year 6 met their new form class and form tutor and asked lots of questions about the days ahead. Now, almost at the end of the week, we’ve been very impressed with how quickly students have settled in and become familiar with the school along with the enthusiasm that they’ve shown for all activities. We’re looking forward to welcoming many of them back for Summer School before they join Year 7 in September.

Tuesday is one of the most eagerly anticipated days of the year for Year 11; our Careers Networking event. Mrs. Mannion reports, ‘The Careers day was a big success with 25 visitors attending from 12 different businesses including Reed Boardall, Jet2, PGL, Ardent, the NHS, the RAF and the Army. Students wore business dress and looked so smart and professional.  In a carousel, students enjoyed asking questions and finding out more about each business and the types of roles available. In the afternoon, students met Post-16 providers and learned about A Levels, vocational courses and apprenticeships. It was a fantastic event all round and our thanks go to all of the visitors who gave up their time to support the event.’

On Thursday evening, parents, carers and staff were treated to a thoroughly enjoyable Summer concert. It’s so lovely to see and hear how our young people get more and more confident and skilled with each performance. The Keyboard Club set off the tone for a fantastic concert with their enthusiastic performance of ‘The Final Countdown’ with vocals from Olivia. Pop Choir then followed, expertly singing a range of songs including ‘Rolling in the Deep’ and ‘Hold back the river’. We had precise piano performances from Esmae, Austin, Jack, Denys and Freddie. Solo Year 11 vocalists Larissa and Ruby came back for their final concert showing a poignancy as they performed ‘Titanium’ and ‘Tattoo’. Olivia gave us a fantastic solo vocal performance of Tightrope and also accompanied Ryan with his engaging vocal performance of ‘If it ain’t me’. James and Bodie both demonstrated their impressive guitar skills in a performance of ‘That’s what you get.’. Our technical crew made sure that it all happened and there was rapturous applause throughout. Everyone certainly went home with a spring in their step! A well done to everyone and a big thank you to Mr. Jackson.

With Sports Day on the horizon, Mr. Field has talked to Form Groups about their team selection to enable that they gain maximum points by having entries for each race. He also talked with students in Years 8 and 9 about a Bewerley Park opportunity in November.

We’ve also had our Ofsted Inspection this week. We were very proud of the way in which our students demonstrated our core values of being ambitious, respectful and resilient and thank you for your responses on Parent View. We’ll let you know when the report is published.

We’re all very much aware that an important football match will be taking place early on Monday morning. We’re expecting our students (and staff!) to be a little weary but we are expecting everyone to be in school and in their form class at the usual time of 8.50a.m.

Have a lovely weekend!

Headteacher’s Blog – 26th June 2026

It’s been ‘Happy New Year’ for all at Boroughbridge High School this week as we’ve started our new timetable. Year 7 have become Year 8 and so on. As usual, there has been a renewed sense of purpose and focus and students and staff have showed remarkable resilience in the high temperatures. We’re pleased to see that more usual Summer temperatures have been forecast for next week as we embark on Week 2.

Throughout the week we’ve enjoyed hearing from students in Years 7 and 8 who were in Normandy last week. They had such a fantastic time and the staff have remarked on how brilliant the students were throughout. Mrs. Reed reports,

‘Our recent Y7 and Y8 trip to Normandy was truly an unforgettable experience that combined learning, history and lots of fun! Visiting the D-Day landing beaches, Pegasus Bridge and the 360 cinema in Arromanches brought the classroom to life, helping us understand the sacrifices made during the Second World War. We also enjoyed exploring quintessential French towns such as Honfleur, Caen and Arromanches.

We thoroughly enjoyed learning all about the intricacies of looking after Alpacas, experiencing life on a submarine as well as putting our French language skills to the test. We sampled traditional French food including our own home made “boule”, a wide variety of biscuits and ice creams galore!  Given the fantastic weather, our evening ritual of walking to the beach to let off steam after a hard day’s work was enjoyed by all.

Our pupils were a real credit to our school throughout the trip, demonstrating excellent behaviour, enthusiasm, kindness and respect at every venue we visited. Their maturity, positive attitude and willingness to embrace every opportunity made the trip even more enjoyable and drew many compliments. It was a fantastic opportunity to build friendships, gain confidence and create lasting memories that we will treasure for years to come.

A big “merci” to our delightful Y7 and Y8 pupils and our tireless team of dedicated staff whose smiles, care and boundless energy never faltered! We will remember them!’

Next week, we’re delighted to be welcoming new students to our school community as Year 6 and their parents and carers will join us on Monday evening and then for their transition days on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. It’s great that we’ve met so many of them before when they’ve joined us for BHS workshops and our current students are looking forward to helping them to settle in.

Our congratulations this week go to  a number of students who have been given a newly created DT Star award. Mr. Groves reports, ‘This year I decided that students should be recognised for their efforts in DT ao I made individual trophies for each year group, which could be awarded to students that had shown resilience and creativity in DT lessons. Students were nominated by their teachers, myself, Dr Lefley and Mrs Hunter and the impressive winners were Phoebe (Year 11), Jago (Year 10), Genevieve (Year 9), Freddie (Year 8) and Ruby (Year 7). There were many individual DT heroes this year and I hope to see many of them choosing DT for  GCSE and developing what is essentially a practical life skill. Well done to all.

Meanwhile Isla in new Year 9 has been demonstrating her ambition, resilience and skill by taking on Europe! Isla’s Allstar cheerleading team competed at the European Summit in Lisbon having had to prove they are at an international standard of cheerleading by winning bids to attend the competition. It sounds like it was a fantastic experience and Isla and her team secured an impressive third place against 24 competing teams. An amazing achievement indeed.

In assemblies this week, Mrs. Godsell-Wright has been marking Refugee Week which, this year, has the theme of courage and aims to foster a deeper understanding of why people are displaced, and the challenges they face when seeking safety. Students were asked to think how they would feel if they were in that situation and their answers to Mrs. Godsell-Wright’s questions demonstrated their empathy and understanding.

A reminder that it’s our Summer Music concert next Thursday (2nd) at 6p.m.  All are very welcome.

Have a lovely weekend!

Headteacher’s Blog – 19th June 2026

On Sunday evening, a party of 48 students from Years 7 and 8 and 7 members of staff set off for an adventure to Normandy. They return on Friday and, from reports sent throughout the week, have had a fantastic time. We’ll tell you more in the Blog next week.

In Forest School this week, Mr. Woodward reports, ‘Students developed their building and outdoor cooking skills. One team chose to focus on building a raised platform / treehouse with a tarp roof using a variety of knots and excellent communication, teamwork and problem- solving skills. Elsewhere in the woods, a team of budding chefs put together a spiced chorizo, butter bean and tomato stew, all cooked over a campfire using a pot hang they crafted from fallen branches they foraged.’

On Monday afternoon, our Silver Duke of Edinburgh students gave their presentations showing the resilience that was needed to complete their expeditions. It was lovely for parents, carers and staff to get a glimpse into the trials and tribulations of their outdoor experience. This weekend we have our Bronze D of E Qualifier expedition.

In assemblies this week, I’ve been focusing on our core value of being ‘ambitious’, building upon Mrs. Mannion’s apprenticeship assembly last week. We looked at how our ‘Ambitious’ expectations support students with academic success along with enabling them to develop the skills and confidence to contribute positively both now and in the future. We also looked at the career progression of some former BHS students and the different routes that they took to become solicitors, film directors, footballers, engineers and the list goes on!

Coming up in Careers, Mrs. Mannion says ‘The next few weeks are a busy time for Year 10 as they go into Year 11. We have a Careers event coming up on Tuesday 30th June where students meet employers and post-16 providers. This helps to prepare for decision-making for the future. Our students have been offered an A Level taster day at King James’s School on Friday 10th July which lots of students have signed up for.’ If you have any questions about Careers then please contact Mrs. Mannion.

Last night, we had a fantastic Year 11 prom. Following the final exam on Monday, it was great for everyone to get together and celebrate their time at Boroughbridge High School in style. As usual, there was an eclectic mix of vehicles used to transport students to The Bridge Inn and it was lovely for staff, parents and carers to see them all arrive. Following a great meal, Prom awards were presented (created by students, Macey and Evie, showing great initiative and leadership). Benji and Macey were crowned Prom King and Queen and then the dancing began. This year group have made such a positive impact on our school community and have been such great role models for younger students. We wish them well for the future and will look forward to seeing them on results day.

Thank you for the responses to the Parent/Carer questionnaire circulated last week. Your feedback helps us to evaluate the progress that we’ve made as a school community and also helps to shape our decision making. There is still time to share your views.

During our Professional Development Day today, we’ve had some training with the NHS Wellbeing in Mind team about how we can offer further support to our young people. We’ve also been making sure that we’re fully prepared for the new timetable.

And so, our new school year is almost upon us. Year 7 students will return on Monday as Year 8, Year 8 as Year 9 and so on. Exciting times all round. The roll up of the timetable enables us to maximise the last four weeks of term whilst also securing a smooth start in September. We do, of course, in an amongst the next few weeks, have our Sports Day and Rewards Trip.

Have a lovely weekend!

Headteacher’s Blog – 12th June 2026

This has been an action packed week!

A group of Year 9 students took on the excitement of Bewerley Park, returning this afternoon sharing stories of challenging activities and many opportunities to demonstrate their ambition and resilience. You can see more on our Facebook page.

Then yesterday, during a somewhat wet day, students took part in the Wellbeing Festival in Dalby Forest. Miss Robson reports, ‘51 KS3 girls attended the Girls’ Wellbeing Festival (colour run) hosted by North Yorkshire Sport. We arrived in the wilderness of Dalby Forest to the wettest mid-June day ever. However, have you met our girls? A girls’ trip out is not going to be ruined by a bit of rain! We started the day on Kin-ball with our superstar Year 9 Young Leaders leading the way. Lizzie, Eva, Olivia and Charlie delivered activities for over 12 schools throughout the day. Amazing work girls! On to dance where the girls learnt a street/hip-hop dance routine to Macklemore – can’t hold us, including a variation of a Mexican wave. This was the perfect warm up for the main event… the colour run! The girls gathered in their white tops, colourful sun glasses and packets of bright powder and off they went running into the forest. A shout out to Dottie for finishing 4th and actually racing the colour run! Our newly multicoloured girls had a quick lunchbreak before taking on the epic inflatables. They were soaked, which actually added to the fun of it and increased the speed of the slides and provided an added challenge to the bungee run. Lots of laughter and smiles all round. To hear Amelia P say “this was even better than last year” makes it all worth while!’

Year 8 have been out on their Geography fieldtrip to Whitby today. Mrs. Gomersal reports, ‘Year 8 enjoyed a fantastic day in Whitby carrying out geography fieldwork to investigate whether the town should be protected from coastal erosion. Armed with clipboards and plenty of enthusiasm, students collected data along the coastline and put their classroom learning into action.

The day wasn’t all hard work, though! We conquered the famous 199 Steps, enjoyed some well-earned ice cream, and soaked up the sights and sounds of the seaside. It was a wonderful opportunity to experience geography beyond the classroom and see first-hand how the beautiful Whitby landscape is being protected.

Throughout the trip, our students were a credit to Boroughbridge High School, showing respect, responsibility and excellent behaviour at all times. We are incredibly proud of how they represented the school and embraced every aspect of this memorable day.’

Assemblies this week have had a focus on the future with Mrs. Mannion, our Careers Adviser, talking about one of a wide range of possible destinations; apprenticeships. Having talked through what an apprenticeship is, students were interested to see how many apprenticeship opportunities there are in our area. For students in Year 10 they are looking forward to their Careers networking event in a couple of weeks.

And in Forest School on Monday, Mr. Woodward said, ‘This week the pupils took on their greatest shelter building challenge to date: A free standing ridgeline tarp-tent. Each group successfully managed to construct their perfectly tensioned structure which held up well against strong winds. An excellent effort and testament to their teamwork and communication skills!’

Mr. Groves was impressed with Year 9 students this week. He said, ‘Year 9 were recently given homework to design a background for their Mini NEA furniture project. There were many excellent ideas presented to me, but the standout two were the efforts of Lily-May and Eva. They have to be commended for their wonderful efforts, hard work and enthusiasm. Well done!’

Our thanks go to the Friends of Boroughbridge High School who ran, along with the help of some of our students, a fundraising tombola at the Boroughbridge Lions’ Fete last weekend.

With the exams almost over, we had our Year 11 Leavers’ assembly this morning. Students had very creatively decorated their shirts in advance with sequins, bows, glitter and artwork and then the great shirt signing began before the assembly. It was a great occasion with students and staff reflecting on and celebrating their time at Boroughbridge High School. Photos from August 2021 onwards were shared with spontaneous gasps at how much or how little people had changed! As is our custom, we then finished with whole group singing. When students join our school, I say that the school should be a better place because they are a part of it and no one can be in doubt that this is the case for our class of 2026. We are very proud of them and will look forward to their Prom next Thursday.

Then at lunchtime our Year 9 students who are setting up a student led Wellbeing Group raised £42.50 in their first fundraising tombola and sweet stall. Well done!

Year 7 and 8 students will be heading off to Normandy next week and, in school, we’ll be on to our final week of the 2025/6 timetable with the new timetable beginning on 22nd June. A reminder that we have a Professional Development Day on Friday 19th June when students do not attend school.

Looking ahead, we’ve had to move our Summer concert to avoid a possible England football match! It will now be at 6p.m. on Thursday 2nd July. We hope to see you there.

Have a lovely weekend!
